Last week we saw the release of two blockbuster titles long past due. Max Payne 3 and Diablo 3, the continuations of two iconic franchises, both released on Tuesday. While both sold tremendously well, there can only be one winner in the UK all-formats charts.
That winner was Max Payne 3 which was Rockstar/Take 2's first number once since L.A. Noire released almost a year ago. It's the first Max Payne title to debut at number one, outperforming the launch week of Max Payne 2 by almost 10 to 1. Max Payne 3 was also the first game in the series not to be developed by Remedy Entertainment.
Blizzard has nothing to be ashamed of with Diablo 3, however. Despite finishing second, Diablo 3 became the 12th fastest selling PC game in the UK ever, selling more than either of the last two Football Manager titles.
According to GfK, "Max Payne 3 benefits from launching on both Xbox 360 and PS3 with 58% of sales going to Xbox 360 and 42% to PS3, although the gap between it and PC-only Diablo is only around 8,000 sales."
It should also be noted that these numbers don't take into account the sizable digital sales the Diablo 3 likely had via Blizzard's Battle.net.
PC gaming is dead? I think not. Check out the top 10 titles for the week ending May 19th.
