After relaxing its heretofore stringent laws regarding video games, China is now something of a wild west for the industry. So there’s bound to be a few bandits around. Enter OUYE, the unabashedly illegal Android console that, in its in-progress crowdfunding campaign, manages to rip off PS4, Xbox One and OUYA.
From PS4, the OUYE (pronounced, I assume, “ow,” as in “Ow, you stepped on my copyright”) takes its parallelogram housing. From Xbox One, its controller design and the grill finish to its top-right panel. And from OUYA, its Android library and somehow more convoluted name. There’s no telling how many copyrights have been trampled between the three, shall we say, influences.
As Kotaku reports, the system’s creators describe the OUYE as “an Android Micro Console being developed by a Shenzhen company.” With specs said to be slightly above the OUYA, the OUYE is expected to retail for roughly $70, which speaks to its business plan.
If it were aiming to simply gouge uninformed or over-eager Chinese consumers by selling them an alleged all-in-one PS4 and Xbox One, the OUYE could have set the price higher. Nevertheless, it’s clearly a cheap, if bold stab at easy money by way of aping established brands. The best part? The creators claim to have spent six months on its "unique design."
