Mega Man Zero released a bit after my Mega Man obsession which is a shame because it wasn't just an awesome evolution of the Mega Man franchise, but it was actually a really fantastic action platformer. I ended up playing it years after, only to discover that I've been missing out on a crazy good game.
Mega Man Zero actually changed up a few mechanics from the standard formula. No longer would players select a stage based on a boss. Instead, the game had an interconnected world with gear gated areas, very similar to any Metroidvania game.
The game is available starting today on the Nintendo Wii U eShop as part of its Virtual Console library, and it retails for $7.99. If you're a fan of Mega Man games and Metroidvania games, Mega Man Zero is pretty much the best of both worlds.
Here is the official description:
After waking from a deep slumber, Zero discovers that…he can't remember anything at all! But the human scientist that just woke him claims he is the legendary Reploid who saved the world many years ago…
Recruited by the underground Resistance, Zero must fight against the government's forces that have been sent to destroy all Reploids. Run, jump, and dash through the chaotic world of Neo Arcadia where the future is not so peaceful after all. Upgrade weapons by defeating enemies, save all 72 Cyber-Elves to get out of sticky situations, and discover who is behind the discord between humans and Reploids. Throughout his journey, Zero may yet uncover his memories and his own identity.
