Mel Gibson has had his fair share of… "controversial opinions" but it's safe to say many can agree with him on the subject of Batman v Superman. When the famous actor and director was asked in an interview with Deadline about his thoughts on high-budget summer blockbusters, the actor had quite a few words to say.
"I look at them and scratch my head," Gibson said. "I'm really baffled by it. I think there's a lot of waste, but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I'd find out different. I don't know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don't know. It seems to me that you could do it for less."
The interviewer mentioned that the bigger the budget the bigger the potential overall take at the box office.
"That's the game, isn't it?" Gibson replied. "I mean, if you're spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don't know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors,"
The interviewer mentioned how the less than stellar Batman v Superman was made on a budget of a quarter of a billion dollars without marketing. "And it's a piece of sh*t." Gibson said passionately.
Gibson than took the chance to offer his thoughts on superheroes and it's exactly what you'd expect from a guy like him. "I'm not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is?" he asked. "Real superheroes didn't wear spandex. So I don't know. Spandex must cost a lot."
Gibson has a new film called Hacksaw Ridge coming out this fall about a man who fought in World War II but didn't fire a single bullet, still managing to save tons of lives. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington.
