Mel Gibson was almost cast in a major Marvel role

Mel Gibson was nearly one of the most powerful beings in the MCU!

Actor Mel Gibson recently revealed that he turned down the role of Odin in 'Thor' when it was offered to him by Marvel.

One of the many ingredients Marvel has included in their films to guarantee their success is the foresight to cast well-known, award winning actors in some of their supporting character roles, like Michael Douglas in Ant-Man or Tilda Swinton in the upcoming Doctor Strange, in order to give their movies some well-deserved integrity. One of the most memorable of which has to be Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Odin in 2011's Thor. It may surprise you to discover, however, the role was not originally intended for him.

Mel Gibson revealed in an interview with The Guardian that he had been approached by Marvel to play the famed Avenger's father, but inexplicably turned down the role. He goes on to talk about what he thinks of the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, of which he spoke very highly, claiming he enjoyed the way movies like Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy turned out.

Despite Gibson having rejected the role initially, perhaps this revelation could open the door for his involvement in the films now that he knows how successful they have proven themselves to inevitably be.
