If Lethal Weapon 5 is happening, it's going to have to be without Mel Gibson. Gibson starred as the crazy police officer Martin Riggs in the 1987 action movie Lethal Weapon, and continued in the role in three sequels. In 2011, a fifth movie was something Warner Bros. wanted to do. It'll just have to be without Gibson and Danny Glover as Riggs and Murtaugh.
Gibson spoke with Comingsoon.net about any character he might like to revisit, but Gibson said there were none. When asked if he'd be enticed into a Lethal Weapon 5, Gibson said:
No, I think the way things are going with Total Recall, they'll just remake those somehow. Though it's really tough to replace Danny [Glover]. He was so amazing in those things. It was a good gig for us. It worked. But we knew it would.
So it sounds like a reboot of the series with new actors is the route that Warner Bros. will have to take. While I think a Lethal Weapon 5 would be a smart career choice for Gibson — who isn't viewed in the best of light due to some rather bad life choices — if Glover doesn't want to do it, then he's smart to not do it, as well.
Tom Hardy is playing Gibson's old role in the new Mad Max film, so it's likely the studio will cast a fine, young actor to reboot the role (maybe someone that would look good with the Martin Riggs mullet?). It wouldn't make sense to continue the old story, as they were already older in Lethal Weapon 4.
When names start getting attached to the project, we'll report more on Lethal Weapon 5 at that time. Until then, Always Sunny in Philadelphia did their own version of Lethal Weapon 5, which you can watch HERE.
