Memories of Mars is taking the open world survival genre to the red planet

PC Gaming is no stranger to the open world survival genre, and for a good reason, they routinely consume hours upon hours of many a gamer all around the world. 505 Games and developer Limbic Entertainment are throwing their hats into the ring with Memories of Mars, an upcoming Early Access title that will leverage the fourth rock from the sun to create an all-new experience within the genre.

505 Games released an announcement trailer coinciding with the reveal, which you can check out below.

The gameplay pillars in Memories of Mars are about what you’d expect. You begin in an unknown and barren wasteland with nothing but the clothes on your back, then scavenge for whatever you can find to eventually build a home base and equipment to protect yourself from the elements and enemies. According to the Memories of Mars Steam page, the game will launch with over 85 unique points of interest across 16 square kilometers that will range from abandoned towns to industrial facilities and vehicles.

Memories of Mars will also mix enemy types, as you’ll have to contend with both NPC’s and other real-world players. The NPC enemies are described as “left over from previous, failed, colonization efforts” who have gone rogue, so they could also potentially serve as a means of players coming together to form (shaky) alliances.

The game will also take a cue from Destiny, as it will feature in-game events that will bring players together to overcome a common goal. Taking part in these activities will reward you with an in-game reward called “Flops.” It’s worth noting that if you aren’t careful, other players can rob, kill, and loot these Flops, so be wary of those around you.

Memories of Mars doesn’t currently have a launch date for its Early Access run or its final release, but the developers are saying that they think they can get the game out within the year. For now, you can expect to see Memories of Mars on Steam sometime in Spring 2018.
