Producer Says Metal Gear Survive Will Not Have Lootboxes

Metal Gear Survive may have a controversy surrounding its use of the Metal Gear franchise in a game that has almost nothing to do with it, but at least it avoids the recent lootbox controversy.

Producer Yuji Korekado stated in an interview with PlayStation Magazine UK, “There will be no loot boxes, and there will be no pay-to-win microtransactions, there will be things like accessories in Metal Gear Online Forward Operating Base in MGSV: The Phantom Pain.”

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain also featured microtransactions that were completely optional and mostly cosmetic. With the controvery surrounding EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II, the clarification was likely needed to curb any further criticism.

It is his belief that gamer’s biggest worries about microtransactions are lootboxes and pay-to-win schemes. He also apologized to fans regarding the communication surrounding the fact that Metal Gear Survive is a spin-off and not a continuation of the series.

“Fans and gamers in general seemed to take Metal Gear Survive to be a continuation of the Metal Gear series, so I regret that we caused that confusion.”

Afterwards, he went into further detail about the single-player campaign, which includes a fairly large zone to explore with several side quests to tackle.

“In the early part of the game, you have a small range that’s centered around the base camp, but as you make your way through the game the area you can explore gradually gets bigger and bigger. And as the area you can explore gets bigger, missions that advance the story appear, as do sub-quests.”

Metal Gear Survive will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 20 in America, February 21 in Japan, and February 22 in Europe. GameZone’s Cade Onder had a chance to play the beta recently, calling the game “A lackluster spin-off that takes multiple steps back.”
