Metal Gear Survive will always require an internet connection – even in single-player

With the release date of Metal Gear Survive being revealed more and more details start to surface, and one detail that might not be one of the best is that players will always have to be connected to the internet to play the game, even the singleplayer campaign.

This isn’t the first time a Metal Gear game has required players to be connected to the internet at all times. When Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was released for PC back in 2014 even creative producer for developer Platinum Games, J.P. Kellams, was confused about what was up with that and promised to get to the bottom of it. When the PlayStation 4 was revealed back in 2013 Sony even said that forcing players to always be online was never an option for them and “the main reason being that many countries don’t have robust internet connections.” , something that’s still the case for many.

That was then and now is now, and Konami has decided to force players to always stay online while playing Metal Gear Survive, as can be seen in the picture above. Konami had this to say regarding Survive and the modes in it.

“Metal Gear Survive is composed of two main modes: Single Player and Co-op. Single Player takes you through the story of Metal Gear Survive while learning fundamental gameplay elements. Single Player lets you explore a strange ruined world as you seek answers and a way to return home. These skills will be put to the test in online Co-op mode. Progress and rewards obtained in both Single Player and Co-op mode carry over and apply to your character across both modes.”

So both modes, singleplayer and co-op is entwined in Metal Gear Survive, progress made in one mode is carried over to the other and so on, something Konami explains visually in the picture below.

Many fans of the franchise seem skeptic towards this new take on Metal Gear, that zombie survival isn’t what Metal Gear is for, but those who have play it say it’s a pretty fun and solid game so far so maybe it’s worth keeping an open mind about this one, even if always being online might be a bit annoying. Though on a personal note, I got no problem with forced Internet connections, that’s the future.

Metal Gear Survive is set for release February 20th, 2018, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
