Metroid: Samus Returns Releases Next to an Awesome New Custom 3DS XL

It looks awesome, but doesn't come with the game.

Metroid: Samus Returns was announced at E3 a month ago for 3DS, set to release in September. Today, it was announced that Nintendo will be releasing a new Metroid-themed New Nintendo 3DS XL on the same day as Metroid: Samus Returns.

The limited-edition system is red with polygonal details on the faceplate with a darkened image of Samus on the front. The back is yellow with the Screwattack logo in the center.

It should be noted, however, that while some of these limited-edition 3DS releases have come with the game they're themed after, this is somehow not the case with the new system, named the Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL. In the US, it's priced at $200. While this news is a bit disappointing, it can't be denied that the new custom system looks great, and is definitely a love letter to Metroid fans.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a reimagined version of the 1991 Gameboy game Metroid II: Return of Samus. It adds a number of new features such as 360-degree aim and a new melee counter system which allows Samus to counter enemy attacks if they get too close. These can be seen among others in this video showing off some new features.

The game and the special edition New 3DS XL hits shelves on September 15.
