Rainfall Films and director Sam Balcomb teamed up with Jessica Chobot to bring to life their vision for a short Metroid film. The concept of the short is based on the classic Nintendo franchise, Metroid, as seen through the lens of a 1960's – 70's science fiction cinema – like Alien and Solaris.
The production team for Metroid: The Sky Calls wanted to take a step away from using a modern approach and attempt to create the film with a callback to the style of the first Metroid game in 1986.
While Chobot is attractive and a big name, the role of Samus doesn't quite suit her nor does the portrayal of Samus. There's quite a bit of gasping and fear that takes away from the idea that she's an ex-soldier and a bounty hunter – let's be honest you don't hear Master Chief doing all that gasping. Other than that, the aesthetic is pretty good and it's nice to see Metroid getting some attention – even if it's in the style of Other M over Metroid Prime.
