Metroidvania sensation gets sequel with Axiom Verge 2

A formidable Metroidvania returns for more

Indie developer Thomas Happ Games has announced the sequel to the wildly-popular Metroidvania Axiom Verge from 2015. Aptly named Axiom Verge 2, the game is currently only confirmed for a Nintendo Switch release in late 2020 but more platforms are promised to be unveiled soon. Check out the reveal trailer here!

When the first Axiom Verge came out four years ago, the similarities to the 2D Metroid titles were uncanny. Going much further than other games in the Metroidvania genre, Axiom Verge was more like a proper spiritual successor to Nintendo’s 2D Metroid games. From gameplay and world design to the oppressive light-horror atmosphere, fans found an unlikely outlet to get their Metroid fix. It’s not like Nintendo has given the franchise the spotlight it deserves.

Hiding in a cargo lift in Antarctica is what appears to be an ancient, alternate Earth, complete with mountains, lakes, deserts, and the ruins of a civilization. But you get the feeling that something else is lurking just past the fringes of reality, waiting to pull you in. You may think you already know the world of Axiom Verge. Think again.

Now, at the tail end of the generation, Thomas Happ Games has shared the exciting news of a sequel with Axiom Verge 2. The sequel features a brand-new cast of characters, enemies, story, and world. One thing that immediately stands out is a more unrestraint use of color while the first game could end up feeling a tad to drab. A welcome change.

At the moment, Axiom Verge 2 is only confirmed to the Nintendo Switch but the developer is openly stating that news about more platforms will come soon. It makes sense since the game was unveiled during Nintendo’s indie showcase live stream yesterday. Seeing how the first one came out on pretty much every system, it’s a safe bet to assume the sequel to follow suit.
