Microsoft and Sony assumed Cyberpunk 2077 would be fixed by launch

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ll notice it’s all about Cyberpunk 2077. With such a big release, one would hope it’s good news but it isn’t unfortunately. Today’s update follows CD Projekt Red’s apology yesterday. The company apologized for releasing the game in an unfinished state on last-gen console and told players they could refund if they were unhappy. This led many to wonder why Microsoft and Sony approved the game for release in the first place.

In a new investors Q&A from CD Projekt Red, the developer took a lot of the blame. They noted that Microsoft and Sony certified the release, expecting the game to be fixed by day one.

“In terms of the certification process and the third parties – this is definitely on our side. I can only assume that they trusted that we’re going to fix things upon release, and that obviously did not come together exactly as we had planned,” said Michał Nowakowski, Board Member responsible for publishing.

CD Projekt Red also took a moment to address the refund situation. Following their statement yesterday, it was assumed their were special arrangements for Cyberpunk 2077 refunds. Many players who tried to refund the game were met with rejections, leading to confusion and frustration. Turns out, there’s nothing unique about the situation and you have to see the policies for Microsoft and Sony for more info.

“Despite several articles I’ve seen that things are being set up just for us, it’s actually not true – these policies are in place and have always been in place; they’re not offered specifically for us. Anyone who has purchased any title on the PlayStation Network or the Microsoft storefront can ask for a refund, and if it’s made within certain boundaries, usually related to time, usage and so on, can ask for that refund. Our procedure here with Microsoft and Sony is not different than with any other title released on any of those storefronts,” said Nowakowski.

A Microsoft spokesperson echoed this sentiment to GameZone yesterday.

“We provide Digital Game Product refunds as part of a consistent and reliable buying experience. For more details on our digital game purchase refund terms, please visit our Xbox support page here. To request an Xbox refund, please follow the steps listed on our Xbox refund page here. For any further questions on ‘Cyberpunk 2077,’ please reach out to CD Projekt Red.”

If you’ve played the game for too long, you can’t get a refund unless you have a generous customer service rep.

Sony’s official refund policy notes that you can’t get a refund if you have downloaded the game. There is an exception of the product is faulty but that seems to be at their discretion.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. A new update will release by next week and 2 patches are coming in January and February. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will also arrive in 2021.
