Microsoft Exec on PS4 Pro: ‘I feel like our product (Scorpio) aspired a little bit higher’

The console wars will never end. And as much as Sony and Microsoft soften things up for PR purposes, the reality is that they are looking to top the other at every possible venture. That's what fierce competition is all about and this time, Microsoft's Albert Penello talked with Eurogamer about Project Scorpio and how it relates to the PS4 Pro.

Just a few weeks ago, Microsoft was rather savage in their social media promotion of the Xbox One S after the Pro was revealed, but now Penello seems to be taking things a small step further (even though he won't admit it) in talking all things Xbox. He comes right out and says that Sony is not entirely clear in their specs for the PS4 Pro. Here's what he said:

"There are just a lot of asterisks in their marketing around 4K, which is interesting because when we thought about what spec we wanted for Scorpio, we were very clear we wanted developers to take their Xbox One engines and render them in native, true 4K. That was why we picked the number, that's why we have the memory bandwidth we have, that's why we have the teraflops we have, because it's what we heard from game developers was required to achieve native 4K."

He continues:

I know that 4.2 teraflops is not enough to do true 4K. So, I feel like our product aspired a little bit higher, and we will have fewer asterisks around the 4K experiences we deliver on our box.

Ouch. Eurogamer's Wesley Yin-Poole's follow-up question was pretty much what we were all thinking.

Are you dancing around an accusation that Sony's marketing for PS4 Pro is misleading?

Penello then puts on the breaks, saying that he is not accusing Sony of anything and that they have been "very open about the compromises around 4K."

So shots fired, but not fired? Good old console wars.

There's no doubt that the Xbox One Scorpio (or whatever it will be called) will end up being a more powerful console in the end (pat yourself on the back now, Xbox fans). But, more than likely, the Pro will end up having a cheaper price point (now you, Sony fans). Almost a reverse of the Xbox 360/PS3 days, if you will, but right now all is not 100% revealed.

It will be fascinating to see where the console wars go from here, but one thing is for sure; they won't be ending anytime soon.
