Microsoft finalizing deal to buy Fallout: New Vegas dev, Obsidian

Microsoft has been on a big spending spree this year by acquiring studios like Ninja Theory, Playground Games, and many more but this may be their biggest one yet. Kotaku is reporting that the tech giant is finalizing a deal that could allow them to acquire Fallout: New Vegas developer, Obsidian Entertainment.

Sources familiar with the deal say that the deal isn’t quite done yet but is no long a matter of if it’ll happen but rather a matter of WHEN it will happen. Some have even gone as far as to say that the deal is 90% done. Of course, we should leave room for the deal to fall apart as things have happened in the past where right as ink is about to put on paper, something causes it all to fail to come together.

The studio has made a name for itself by both working on major IP like Fallout and Star Wars but creating acclaimed RPGs like Pillars of Eternity. When asked for comment by Kotaku, the independent company offered a cheeky response.

“Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumors or speculation other than to say that the Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up,” said an Obsidian spokesperson.

While Microsoft is obviously looking to invest heavily into Xbox for next-gen with all these studios, Kotaku notes that the company is also looking to continue building its PC offerings. Obsidian has been largely a PC-centric studio so this would make them a perfect fit for expanding Microsoft’s PC library.

There’s no word as to what specifically Microsoft would like Obsidian to do under their control but it would give new potential for the studio with resources and financial support they had previously never had access to.

We’ll continue to keep you posted as this story develops. Microsoft is holding an event this November where this acquisition could finally be announced.
