The revolutionary party chat feature came to Xbox first and a few years later Playstation followed suit, but now Microsoft is considering taking it up another level.
Players on both consoles can currently connect to Xbox Live, subsequently allowing them to chat through a messaging system. This is obviously not the most fluent of communication systems, with many gamers preferring to use a microphone.
Consequently, friends that have upgraded to Xbox One have not been able to talk to friends that remained with Xbox 360 in a preferred manner. That could well change in the future, it would seem.
Microsoft has other priorities at the moment but Phil Spencer has suggested that the cross-over chat feature is coming soon. During an exchange with another Twitter user Spencer was pressed on the probability of this feature coming soon, he said the following:
This tweet confirms that Microsoft are currently working on the incoming launch of Windows 10, as expected, however it more than certainly suggests that a cross-over chat system are being considered. After the hype of Windows 10 dies down, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft continue to pursue the promotion of backwards compatibility, and this chat system would be an ideal and welcome addition.
