Earlier this month, the NPD Group released the video game sales figures in the US for March and it turned out that the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One. An NPD Group representative detailed that the culprit in the division between sales was the console hardware.
Microsoft's third quarter 2015 results, which cover January through March, only further detail the drop off in Xbox sales.
In total, Xbox revenue is down 24% – hardware makes up for 20% of the loss. So what's going on with Microsoft? Back in March the company noted that the cumulative sales for the Xbox One outpace the Xbox 360's sales. Bottom line, there are less people purchasing Xbox 360's. It is not hard to believe, considering that many games are only being developed with the new consoles in mind (Mad Max, Just Cause 3, Project Cars, Final Fantasy XV .etc). On top of that, Microsoft cut the price of the Xbox One.
It isn't bad news all around, Microsoft might have lost around $306 million in revenue, but they are up 6.5% for the overall period and the amount of Xbox Live users has jumped up 30%.
