Microsoft Q2 FY14: Xbox One ships 3.9 million units, Xbox 360 moves 3.5 million

Microsoft's Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined to a ship a total of 7.4 million consoles in Q2 FY14, ended December 31, 2013.

In reporting its financial results for the quarter, Microsoft got a little more specific regarding Xbox One sales for the year, revealing 3.9 million Xbox One consoles were shipped in the second quarter. That means 3.9 million was the total number of units shipped in 2013 for the new console. But remember, units shipped is not the same as units sold. Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that it had sold over three million Xbox One consoles in 2013, compared to the PlayStation 4's 4.2 million sold.

Its predecessor, the Xbox 360, meanwhile shipped 3.5 million units in the same Q2 period.

“Our Commercial segment continues to outpace the overall market, and our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter,” said Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer. “The investments we are making in devices and services that deliver high-value experiences to our customers, and the work we are doing with our partners, are driving strong results and positioning us well for long-term growth.”

“We delivered record revenue as demand for our business offerings remains high and we made strong progress in our Devices and Consumer segment,” added Amy Hood, chief financial officer at Microsoft. “These results reflect our focus on execution, cost discipline, and long-term shareholder value as we continue to drive the strategic transformation of the company.”

Overall revenue for the quarter was reportedly $24.52 billion, up from the $21.46 billion during the same period in 2012.
