Microsoft responds to videos of smoking Xbox Series X units

Yesterday, the Xbox Series X launch and while we’ve had no real issues with ours, some others have. Some report faulty disc drives while others have reported more extreme issues. Several videos of the Xbox Series X oozing smoke from the top of its vents have appeared online. While the legitimacy of the videos have been called into question, they’re being spread around like a wildfire.

Many believe someone blew a vape into the Xbox Series X vents, given the look of the smoke. Others think they could have dropped something inside of it that shouldn’t be in there. We reached out to Microsoft for a statement. Xbox believes their product is meeting industry standards but will investigate the issue.

“We take all product safety reports seriously and our products meet or exceed industry standards. We are in the process of investigating further,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.

Even if someone just blew a vape into their Xbox Series X, Microsoft won’t be taking that chance. Xbox Series X is known to run hot but it is supposed to. Early reports worried consumers as they heard very hot air blows out the top. This is not a result of overheating, it is in fact doing it’s job. The more hot air released through the vents, the less is trapped inside the system.

It appears there isn’t any reason for real concern at the moment but we’ll keep you posted if this story develops.
