Microsoft reveals augmented reality headset, HoloLens, at Windows 10 event

It has been argued whether or not virtual reality is the future of gaming, but what about augmented reality? Microsoft asked this question, and their answer to it is the HoloLens.

The HoloLens, revealed during the Windows 10 event, is a completely wireless headset that will blend real objects with virtual. The headset is composed of see-through lenses, spatial sound and sensors. It has its own custom CPU and new Holographic Processing Unit (HPU), it is intended to be completely independent of any electronic – meaning, you won't need a phone or computer to run it.

A video showcasing the HoloLens (pictured in the upper right) shows Minecraft in action. The headset will display the image across (what seems to be) every flat surface. This image isn't the beginning and the end of the HoloLens at the Windows 10 event, attendees will be able to play Minecraft on the 'HoloDeck' after the show. The device isn't simply for entertainment though, it can be used design, engineering, and scientific exploration as well.

The HoloLens will work off of voice commands, tap gestures, and gaze tracking to activate menus and navigate. The 'HoloStudio' will allow users to build, glue constructs together, spray colors, rotate and resize –anything built in the HoloStudio can be sent and printed on a 3D printer.

Here's a closeup of the headset:

Ever since the Tupac hologram holographs have been getting out of control, I'm looking at you sold out Hatsune Miku concert.
