Microsoft's GDC presentation was focused on a "unified vision for gaming," and part of that vision is incorporating the PC back into their gameplan. Prior to the release of the Xbox on November 15, 2001, Microsoft was known for their PC gaming (the first game I ever played was on Windows!).
During their presentation at GDC, the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, admitted that PC gaming and Microsoft are not what they once were.
“Gaming was once central to what we did on Windows, but we've lost our way. My hope is that the next Windows release will be the best ever for gamers, offering a single gaming social network, operating system, application player and store across all Windows devices.”
What he is hoping for is that Windows 10, the operating system that will bring games back to the PC and unite the PC and Xbox One, will bring Microsoft back into the PC gaming field. It should be noted that Microsoft has been promising PC games support for the PC, but it seems like this time around they are serious about it.
Microsoft, please do not make resurrect Games for Windows live — I see your App Store on Windows 10 and it makes me nervous. Digital distribution removes the 'put it in and play' mentality, but I don't want to be limited to one gaming service (and I like Steam).
