Crossplay continues to be a hot topic, particularly as it pertains to Sony and Microsoft. In speaking with Game Reactor, Xbox's Head of Marketing, Aaron Greenberg confirmed that the company has been in talks with Sony about crossplay and that he is "hopeful that they'll be supportive of it."
Here's the full excerpt:
"Absolutely, yeah. We're talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it."
Greenberg's remarks echo similar sentiments from other developers like ARK: Survival Evolved's Jeremy Stieglitz, CD Projekt RED, and Psyonix. However, Sony isn't commenting one way or the other.
Microsoft had previously sent out an open invitation to Sony and Nintendo about a Crossplay initiative, but doing so would require every player to use Windows 10 to do so, giving Microsoft almost complete control. Until there is a resolution, you can expect this narrative to keep on going.
