The yearly celebration of all things Minecraft took place over the weekend and developer Mojang and publisher Microsoft had a lot of news to share about the blocky phenomenon. One highlight is the opening cinematic for the interesting action-adventure spin-off Minecraft Dungeons. Watch it here!

The world first heard about Minecraft Dungeons a year ago, during last year’s Minecon, and today we get a great look at the game’s story in form of it’s opening cinematic. Unlike the regular Minecraft, Dungeons’ story plays a much bigger role in the action-adventure experience. Yes, crafting and scrounging for resources takes a backseat here in favor of traditional action more akin to Diablo. By playing with a party of up to four real players, Minecraft Dungeons is also continuing the series tradition of making everything better when being played with friends.

When a lonely, outcast Illager stumbles upon a mysterious object with terrifying powers, his entire existence is turned upside down. Before long, he finds himself on a path of evil, causing mayhem across the Overworld. Who can stop him?

The new trailer establishes the antagonist Illager who terrorizes the friendly inhabitants of the world after getting his hand on a powerful artifact. It’s up to you and your friends to rid the lands of mobs – old and new – and bring peace once again. But there’s more. Gamers will immediately realize that Minecraft Dungeons looks leaps and bounds more sophisticated than the original Minecraft. It still sports the same blocky aesthetic but by using the Unreal 4 engine, Dungeons is a feast for the eyes.

Dungeons is coming out in Spring 2020 but eager fans can sign up today for a chance to play the game early in the upcoming closed beta. Everyone else will have to wait when the game hits on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
