Microsoft: Xbox One ‘built for the future’; will last you ‘conservatively a decade’

The Xbox One is built to last. Like the length of this current-gen, Microsoft is expecting the Xbox One will last you "conservatively a decade." This doesn't necessarily reflect the lifespan of your exact console, as we're all aware parts can fail, but rather the overall expectancy that Microsoft has before having to introduce another console and do all of this over again.

Speaking to Games Industry, Microsoft Canada's Xbox director of marketing Craig Flannagan explained this is made possible because the Xbox One is "built for the future."

"I think there is not a better experience you can buy this holiday, and there will not be a time this generation where there's a better experience you can buy than Xbox One," Flannagan boasted. "And it's probably going to be a pretty long generation. We're probably here for a while because we're built for the future. This is a console that will last you, conservatively a decade, if I had to put a bet down today."

Comparing both the Xbox One and PS4, Flannagan obviously sided with his company's console, saying: "Xbox One is going to start ahead, in terms of experience we can deliver." Not only does he believe the Xbox One will outperform the PS4 at launch, but also feels that "because we're built for the future, we're going to stay ahead."

Bold words from a guy who's company faced major backlash from consumers over early next-gen policies. Most analysts believe the PS4 will outpace the Xbox One at launch, but as we learned with this generation, it's anyone's game — especially when you take into account 10 years worth of sales.

"This is far and away the biggest launch we've ever done," Flannagan concluded. "It's the most hardware we've ever produced. It's the most we've ever pre-sold. We're pre-selling a little over 2-to-1 from what we did with Xbox 360. The momentum on launch has been really good."
