Speaking to x360a.org about everything Xbox, Microsoft UK’s Entertainment Director Stephen McGill shot out a barbed dismissal regarding Sony’s Blu-Ray format.
“I think people now recognise what a smart decision it was to keep the [360] pricing low,” says McGill. “And actually Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format. People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay. So, who needs Blu-ray?”
I had this very discussion with a diehard PS3 fanboy friend recently, and although Blu-Ray may look and sound amazing for the small percentile of audio/visual-philes who actually purchased all the costly equipment needed, there’s a pretty clear reason why the Wii is king: People are poor. By the time the world at large can afford Blu-Ray, digital downloads will have become the dominant source for video gaming. GameStop and it’s mighty ego are already starting to feel the pressure; it’s only a matter of time.
