Minecraft: Education Edition coming this June

Obligatory "Where was this when I was a kid?"

Minecraft: Education Edition, a version of the blocky survival game tailored for practical use in schools, will release later this June.

Minecraft has been used in schools for some time now, but its classroom odyssey only began in earnest earlier this year when Mojang and Microsoft outlined the Education Edition program, which builds upon the trial run of MinecraftEDU, an earlier prototype.

In a recent update, the Minecraft Education team confirmed that the program will begin in May with a beta in over 100 schools and 30 countries, ahead of its official early access release coming in June. Minecraft: Education Edition will be available on Windows 10 and OS X in 11 languages and 41 countries at launch.

Minecraft: Education Edition is classroom-crafted and includes many unique features designed to support more structured lessons, including custom multiplayer sessions, student photo portfolios, special in-game blocks like signs and borders, and a richer tutorial. Minecraft lessons plans, such as an engineering redstone class and a historical tour through the Giza pyramids, are also available for download.
