Microsoft's E3 2017 presentation revealed that Minecraft would be a major graphical update soon, as well as getting unified gameplay on almost all platforms. Unfortunately, PlayStation owners were left out of this newfound unity between Microsoft and Nintendo, but it was Sony who decided that.
Mojang CEO Jonas Märtensson spoke with the Norwegian site PressFire (translated via Gaf) on Minecraft hitting the Nintendo Switch and revealed a number of things, including how badly they want Sony to join in on the cross-play and how Xbox Live will be used in the game.
In the interview, Märtensson revealed that Mojang was "tying everything together with Xbox Live" which means all Minecraft platforms will be using a unified login, even on Nintendo Switch.
"…everyone that's in on this, all the platform holders, have been pretty pragmatic and understanding of that what we're trying to do is create a good experience for the players. We needed a good system to connect everyone, and Xbox Live is a good system."
This way, players won't have to try to blend multiple online services together to play together, a move that should make online gameplay a bit more smooth. Luckily the online gameplay isn't the only thing that should be smooth. Nintendo and Microsoft have been getting along fairly well, as far as working together.
"No. We have always wanted to, from a Minecraft perspective, try and give the players as many options as possible, on any platform. Nintendo has been very open when it comes to working together, so I'd say it's been very smooth."
While Nintendo and Microsoft have been getting along, Sony recently defended their choice to stay away from cross-play, saying that it was for the good of their own users. When asked about the Sony, Märtensson revealed that the hold up was on Sony's side, but that Mojang would "really like to have Sony in on this."
