Minecraft passes 100 million registered users on PC

Mojang's hit sandbox game Minecraft has reached 100 million registered users on PC. The game's creator, Markus 'Notch" Persson made the announcement on Twitter yesterday, adding that it has a 14.3% "conversation rate to paid accounts."

In other words, 100 million isn't how many copies of the game have been sold, but instead 14.3% of that — or, 14.34 million copies to date. That's about the same number Perrson revealed earlier this month.

Minecraft first became available for purchase publicly on PC in May 17, 2009 as a developmental alpha version. Following many, many updates, the game was "officially" released on November 18 2011. Perrson's unique approach to Minecraft's release has sparked many to follow suit, offering early builds of a game for significantly cheaper and gradually releasing updates until it's finally ready for full release and full price.

Though Minecraft started as PC-only, it has since become available on a number of platforms including Xbox 360 where it has sold over 10 million copies to-date. A PS3 version was released in December 2013 and sold more than one million units during the month. There's also a Minecraft: Pocket Edition version for iOS and Android and that too has become a hit, having sold more than 10 million copies as of May 2013.

Looking ahead, Minecraft will also release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. As of right now though, there are no plans for a Wii U or 3DS version.
