Minecraft is one of the most popular video games on the market. Today, it reached 144 million copies being sold across all platforms it’s available on.
Helen Chiang, Microsoft head of Minecraft, recently told PopSugar this, also adding that the game set a new record of 74 million active players in a month.
“We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we’re at 74 million monthly active users — and that’s really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it’s through the game updates or bringing in new players from across the world. That’s really our goal, to keep building the community that we have.”
The title has been on countless platforms, with the latest being a 3DS port. The game originally released on PC in 2009 when Mojang was a private company with Markus “Notch” Persson at the helm. Since then, it has seen release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Switch, iOS, Android, and 3DS.
Although Mojang was purchased by Microsoft in September of 2014 for $2.5 billion, they have mostly left the development team to do their work and simply act as their publisher, much to the relief of their fans. “Minecraft is more than a great game franchise,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said. “It is an open-world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.”
Minecraft‘s latest update Better Together added a ton of features back in September.
