While the idea of an episodic series set in the world of Minecraft might seem like an odd concept to some of you, especially since the core game features no other story than the one the players create in their own minds, Mojang sees Minecraft: Story Mode, the newly announced collaboration with Telltale Games, as a "no-brainer."
"People really like the idea of stories about Minecraft, but forcing a narrative into our core game experience would restrict players' freedom to view the world in their own unique ways," said Mojang Chief Word Officer Owen Hill. "Instead, letting them explore an alternate interpretation via Minecraft: Story Mode, drive by the proven might of Telltale, seems like a no-brainer."
Minecraft: Story Mode – A Telltale Games Series is currently in development and is on track to premiere in 2015. Like previous work from Telltale, it will be released as an episodic game series. It will be set in the world of Minecraft, and will feature an original story driven by player choice. Mojang said it won't be an "official" story for Steve, or explain the world of Minecraft in detail; rather, it will be an "entirely original Minecraft experience" with new characters and familiar themes.
"Partnering with Mojang is a dream come true for us as game makers and as storytellers," added Telltale Games president and co-founder Kevin Bruner. "Minecraft is a world of infinite possibility and imagination. Working with the Mojang team on our own unique, story-driven interpretation of their fascinating universe is a tremendous honor. We simply cannot wait for fans across the world to take off with us on this new adventure."
