Minecraft: Story Mode announced by Telltale Games and Mojang

Telltale Games — developers of hit game franchise spinoffs like The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, and recently Game of Thrones — dropped a major bomb today, announcing a collaboration with Mojang (developers of Minecraft). The two developers will work together to create Minecraft: Story Mode, a narrative-driven video game about one of the most popular games in the industry, Minecraft.

Mojang says it will collaborate with Telltale and members of the community to make the game "Minecrafty as possible." Of course, it will also have Telltale's signature touch on it. For example, Minecraft: Story Mode will be released episodically, just like The Walking Dead and Tales from the Borderlands, which is another developer-collaboration between Telltale Games and Gearbox Software.

Minecraft: Story Mode will be set in the world of Minecraft, and will feature an original story, driven by player choice. It won't be an "official" story for Steve, or explain the world of Minecraft in detail, but it will mix new characters with familiar themes "in an entirely original Minecraft experience."

While we'll have to wait until next year for more details, the first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode is expected to release "some time" in 2015, and will be available on Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices.

Also putting rumors to rest, Mojang confirmed that "the Minecraft 2 thing was a joke. No really. I twas a joke."
