Mini Ninjas invades App Store with cartoon to follow

Nearly four years have passed since IO Interactive's tiny ninjas came to consoles and Nintendo DS, but Square Enix hasn't forgotten about the game. Now it's arrived on the App Store without warning.

That's just like a ninja.

Mini Ninjas costs 99 cents for iOS. Only this is a different, side-scrolling version than the third-person action-adventure from 2009, and it's developed by Magic Pockets instead of IO.

Players can control four ninja heroes and transform into four animals.

This isn't the only recent game in the series. A spin-off called Mini Ninja Adventures came out for Kinect via Xbox Live Arcade last year.

Mini Ninjas for iOS seems to follow the same pattern set by games like Rayman Origins, which became Rayman Jungle Run, and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, which turned into Hell Yeah! Pocket Inferno on mobile devices.

Ben Bateman, the community manager for Square Enix Europe, tweeted today that a cartoon series based on the property would be "coming soon."
