Modern Warfare 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution lead Amazon in video game sales for 2011

Online retail giant Amazon.com is known for it's competitive deals on virtually every product out there – including video games.  This year, we saw some great video game deals from Amazon, especially towards the holiday months.  But how did that stack up in sales?

While Amazon didn't reveal specific numbers, they did inform Joystiq of their top-selling games for 2011.  Amazon shared two separate categories for sales: physical and downloadable games.  To the average viewer, this may seem a little redundant.  You may feel all video games should be lumped into one sales category.

But for a gamer you probably already know that these two categories target extremely different demographics and result in totally different sales reports.  As you are about to see, the physical and digital sales lists vary greatly.

Check out Amazon's top 10 physical and digital game sales for 2011 below:

Physical (platforms are combined, but collector's editions are not included)

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  2. Just Dance 3
  3. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  4. Battlefield 3
  5. Batman: Arkham City
  6. Madden NFL 12
  7. Portal 2
  8. Just Dance 2
  9. Gears of War 3
  10. FIFA Soccer 12

As expected, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 led all physical games in sales, including Battlefield 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Madden NFL 12Just Dance 3 was the second best-seller, followed by Skyrim.  What's particularly interesting is that Gears of War 3 is the only console specific game to crack the top 10.

Digital

  1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  2. Battlefield 3
  3. The Sims 3
  4. Battlefield Bad Company 2
  5. Sid Meir's Civilization V
  6. Dead Island
  7. Total War: Shogun 2
  8. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
  9. Crysis 2
  10. Dragon Age 2

As you can see, the digital sales list is completely different, with Deus Ex: Human Revolution leading in sales.  Some of you may have expected Battlefield 3, but with the game being offered on Origin, Amazon faced an extremely competitive market for it.  The Sims 3 continued its strong performance proving that the franchise is far from dead.
