Minecraft could be coming to the PS3 or PS4 once its exclusivity deal with Microsoft ends, Mojang's Jens Bergensten revealed. Speaking to iGamer, the current Minecraft lead developer explained, "Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. He then added, ”When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.”
Minecraft first released on Xbox 360 back in May 2012 and was profitable in just one hour. The game went on to smash Xbox LIVE Arcade digital sale records, selling more than any other title in just the first 24 hours of release. Although the game was released on Xbox 360 running the Beta 1.6.6 patch, it was quickly brought up to date; fans are currently awaiting the release of Title Update 9 which is expected to introduce The End, an alternate dimension that plays home to a vast number of Endermen and the lone Ender Dragon boss.
The game's release on Xbox proves that the transition from this once PC-exclusive sandbox adventure to consoles can be successful. As a PlayStation owner, I'd love to see the game show up on the PS4, but I can't help but wonder why Mojang is so against the Wii U. The Wii U GamePad tablet seems like a perfect fit for Minecraft. Rather than having to separately pull up an inventory menu or map on the Xbox (or PlayStation), you could be able to access everything directly from the GamePad's screen. Everything would be directly in front of you, keeping the TV screen free to see the environment. I suppose Mojang is concerned with the lackluster Wii U sales.
