‘More destruction’ to be the focus of future Battlefield titles

DICE wants more destruction in its Battlefield series. While some studios are focused on pushing the envelope of storytelling through video games, DICE would rather stick to what it's comfortable with — and that's creating memorable experiences through intricate systems. Battlefield 4 has a story, but there's no doubt that levolution is clearly the big feature this time around. Looking ahead, it certainly seems that this will be the type of feature that DICE will focus on with next iterations in the Battlefield franchise.

“I hate to say this, but storytelling does not come naturally to Swedes,” DICE head honcho Patrick Soderlund told the NY Times.  “But we’re good at designing systems, and that’s what these games really are. Minecraft puts a box in front of you and says, ‘Do whatever you want with it.’ Battlefield is a system designed for entertainment rather than for telling you a story.”

Patrick Bach echoed Soderlund's statements, adding, "The story is just the coating on the game. The game is now the experience of playing it."

So how will Battlefield 5 enhance the playing experience? "More feature. More extras. More destruction," Bach concluded. "Every new game needs to be the next big thing."
