Rumors and speculation of Left 4 Dead 2 coming to Xbox One via the system's backward compatibility feature have been swirling around for a while, but now we have proof.
An image of Left 4 Dead installing on Xbox One shared on Reddit was confirmed hours ago by fellow Redditor "Apherix" who posted directions on how to download the game on your Xbox One. It did require that you already own the digital version of Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox 360. The steps were as follows:
On your Xbox One, search for my gamertag: Apherix
Go into my profile and look at following/followers.
Find Left 4 Dead 2 and continue selecting it until it lets youdownload it.
Download/Install.
Unfortunately, it looks like Microsoft has quickly put a stop to this, but those who caught it in time were able to download and install Left 4 Dead 2 on their Xbox One. Playing it now, however, requires that you be offline. For everyone else, it looks like you'll need to wait until Microsoft officially releases the game via backward compatibility. The good news is, Microsoft recently announced changes to the way Xbox One backward compatibility titles will be released.
Rather than waiting until a set monthly launch date to reveal and release a new batch of titles, Microsoft will instead release backward compatible games as they become ready and available. Considering Left 4 Dead 2 is playable offline on Xbox One for some, I'd imagine it's not too far off.
Video proof of the method working at one point can be seen below.
And now we wait.
Microsoft's latest batch of backward compatibility games arrived last week and featured Counter-Strike: GO, Aegis Wing, Soulcalibur, and a few others. The highlight, however, was The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which is currently free to download for Xbox One until February 5th.
