More rumors emerge about PS4 and Xbox 720 tech specs

The never ending speculation surrounding Microsoft's and Sony's next-gen consoles continued today with a new report from VG247 claiming the PS4 has a "50% raw power advantage" over the Xbox 720.

"Based on information out of CES", the report cites developer sources who told the website  that the next PlayStation will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops while the next Xbox will achieve 1.23 teraflops — a "50% raw, computational power advantage" for the PS4.

According to the sources, however, Microsoft's console will have more RAM. The report states the Xbox 720 will have 8GB of RAM, with 3GB reserved for the OS, apps, and security, and the remaining 4-5GB for games. Conversely, the PS4 is said to have 4GB of RAM with 1GB reserved for OS, security, and apps, and 3GB for games. Both machines are said to have the ability to read 100GB Blu-ray discs.

What exactly does all of this mean? Right now, nothing as it's nothing more than speculation. Sony and Microsoft haven't even announced the new consoles, but are expected to do so sometime this year. The latest rumor calls for Sony to unveil the PS4 even before E3, the largest gaming trade show event.

When it's all said and done, two things will really have the biggest impact on consumer choice: the console exclusive titles and already established preferences.
