Mortal Kombat movie reboot starting pre-production this month

New details are emerging about the movie reboot to the legendary fighting series Mortal Kombat. According to journalists and politicians, the new movie will be mainly filmed in South Australia and is set to be the biggest movie production ever done in the region.

Mortal Kombat of course, isn’t a stranger to movie adaptations. Who could ever forget the gloriously cheesy first Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 which brought us one of the most memorable theme songs in the history? The movie is such a cult classic that the game’s developer even made a tribute to it by using a remix of the 90s dance song for the launch trailer of their newest entry Mortal Kombat 11.

Now, details are still a bit slim about the actual movie but the Premier of South Australia proudly confirmed today that Warner Bros. will shoot the new Mortal Kombat movie in South Australia. From Australian journalist Claire Campbell we further learn that the movie will be the biggest movie production in South Australia history with a projected budget higher than $70 Million. That’s a lot of money for a video game movie adaptation and could be a good sign that the Warner Bros. won’t half-ass the movie.

Furthermore, we learn that the script for the new Mortal Kombat movie is being written by Greg Russo who is also doing the script for an untitled Resident Evil movie. The director will be Simon McQuoid who readers might remember from the epic “Michael” commercial many years ago. Both are relative newcomers in the movie industry, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of movie Mortal Kombat is going to be.

In terms of story, we already know that this reboot plans to introduce an entirely new character as the protagonist, and a teenage Raiden. Sounds interesting and if all fails, at least we hope it will be as good a bad movie as the 1995 original.
