If we were in a normal world, we’d be a month away from the new Mortal Kombat film. The movie was set to release in theaters in January but alas, the pandemic put a stop to that. Warner Bros. delayed the film until theaters were more widely re-opened but now we have an official release date.
Mortal Kombat will release in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16th, 2021. The move comes as Warner Bros. moves their entire 2021 slate of films to debut simultaneously on their HBO Max streaming service. Mortal Kombat seems to be one of the first to release under this plan. Movies like The Suicide Squad, Dune, and Godzilla vs. Kong are also set to follow this strategy.
Producer Todd Garner released a poster with the iconic logo for the fighting series. Garner also noted that a trailer will release in 2021 on Twitter.

It sounds like the film will be committing to the gory nature of the series. Earlier this year, actor Lewis Tan teased the intensity of the violence in Mortal Kombat. It should hopefully be a strong contrast to the cheesy nature of the 90s film.
“Let me just say this, there were some days on set where I felt sick. I am not kidding, they did not hold back.”
Mortal Kombat will release on April 16th, 2021. It won’t be the only video game movie in 2021, though. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series recently wrapped filming and will debut in the summer with Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.
