Mortal Kombat X is going mobile

While Ubisoft is now making available the content previously locked behind their tie-in mobile game, NetherRealm Studios is doing the exactly opposite with Mortal Kombat X. According to the developer, Mortal Kombat X is getting a mobile tie-in game that will actually work similarly to the developer's previous mobile tie-in for Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The Mortal Kombat X mobile game is described in a similar fashion to the Injustice one; it's a free-to-play "fighting/card battler." In Injustice (mobile) players collected cards that represented fighters, upgraded them and fought AI with swipes and taps. Classic Mortal Kombat fighters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden will be available alongside new kombatants in the Mortal Kombat X mobile game,

Here's the part that sucks, though. Certain content for the console version of Mortal Kombat X will only be able to be unlocked by playing the mobile version and vice versa. If you're looking to get that special costume or achievement, you'll have to play the mobile game.

Locking content behind the mobile wall can often be seen as a money grab. While the mobile game is free-to-play, it'll likely have some form of microtransactions to speed up progression.

Mortal Kombat X will be available on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Android in April 2015.
