Mortal Kombat X's story is filled with classic characters you can fight against, but not play as. Among the cast of nonplayable characters that you'll encounter are Rain and Baraka. However, a clever player has managed to mod the game's PC version so that you are actually able to play as these characters.
Player XVermillion has posted a video on YouTube showing off his newfound capability to play as Rain, Sindel and Baraka in training mode.
Taking to Reddit, he explained the process that went into unlocking the characters. The TL;DR of it is that he took assets from the game's source files and renamed them to match the names currently used by those associated with Shinnok.
There are other files you can change to get stuff like Rain's name under the health Bar but the only files I modded are in the "Assets" folder I believe; there should be 2 associated with Rain (Rain_A.xxx and another one I can't remember but you can just search the folder for Rain)
Anyway, I backed up the files for Shinnok (the character I'm replacing) and renamed Rain's files to match those associated with Shinnok's 1st costume slot (CHAR_Shinnok_A.xxx and one other, the one that matches Rain's other one) and moved 'em to the folder and overwrote Shinnok's old files with the newly renamed Rain files.
What you see is just me playing in training mode with what the game thinks is Shinnok but is using Rain's model and moveset.
XVermillion admits he wasn't able to get all the moves to work, like Sindel's flight or hair whip, but it's still pretty cool that he managed to unlock them at all. More importantly, does the fact that each of these characters can be played as with their own movesets indicate they could arrive later on as DLC?
