NetherRealm is bringing plenty of new features to Mortal Kombat X, but they aren't forgetting their roots. The latest trailer for the upcoming fighting game detailed plans for an "aggressive and elaborate online experience."
The first thing you do in MKX is pick a faction to take part in the Faction Wars. Faction Wars mode is essentially a "persistent meta game" that tracks the challenges you complete and puts points towards your faction. The challenges will be issued by NetherRealm every week and there will be one faction that wins every week (depending on how many faction members complete the challenges given to them).
Once a week for 24 hours the entire faction system will be invaded by another realm, bringing all the factions together against a common enemy.
Players will be able to rank up within the faction and unlock custom faction wars that are specific to the faction you picked.
Everything you do in the game (including what you do in game modes and story) puts points towards your faction and everything you do within your faction effects other aspects of the game. Essentially, the entire game is interconnected – so long as you're playing online.
These are the factions that you will be choosing from:
Factions:
Lin Kuei – Team Sub-Zero
White Lotus – Liu Kang, Raiden and related to the order of light
Special Forces – Jax, Sonya and other operatives
Black Dragon – Kano and those who oppose the Special Forces
Brotherhood of Shadow – Led by Quan Chi
Mortal Kombat X will be released worldwide on April 14, 2015 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.
