Netflix calls an end to House of Cards amid Kevin Spacey allegations

Netflix has revealed that its Emmy-nominated House of Cards TV series will come to an end following the conclusion of the next season, amid the recent controversy surrounding Kevin Spacey.

An allegation surfaced two days ago as actor Anthony Rapp claimed Spacey had passed unwanted sexual advances towards him back when he was 14-years-old.

The then 26-year-old has been accused of trying to "seduce" the former Star Trek: Discovery star during a party at his New York City apartment block in the 1980's.

Spacey has since released an apology on social media, while Netflix and Media Rights Capital have also addressed the situation publicly.

“Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey,” the companies said in a joint statement today.

“In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Netflix has made it clear that such allegations are "deeply" troubling, however several sources claim that the recent controversy is not the reason behind the upcoming cancellation.

The decision to pull the plug on the show, which some would argue kickstarted Netflix's launch of original content, has been in the pipeline for some months – according to several sources.

The remaining episodes will air in mid-2018 with the launch of the sixth season.
