Netflix says the PS4 and Xbox One will offer 4K resolution support by year’s end

Netflix, the on-demand television and movie streaming service, has suggested that the Playstation 4 will adopt 4K resolution support by the end of the year. Currently, neither the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 support this resolution.

The Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt revealed to the Huffington Post that Sony had "promised" a newer version of the PS4 that had 4K video support and would eventually support HDR.

This speculation was founded on Hunt's prediction that more televisions would be sold with 4K and HDR support, a feature that would greatly benefit Netflix. It has been reported that Netflix quietly raised the subscription fee by $3 for individuals with TV's that supported 4K resolution.

Netflix explained that Hunt expects both consoles to be refreshed this year, on a two-year hardware update cycle. Given the commitment from Sony that he alluded to, he says that when the new PlayStation 4 revision is released, it will include 4K support. He asserts that the updated Xbox One will also offer that same feature.

The company went on to explain that Hunt expects that the 'promise' Sony made will have the PS4 to going through a two-year hardware update cycle and the Xbox One following suit to stay competitive.

Both Sony and Microsoft denied to comment on such speculation when Forbes probed them for a comment of 4K support.
