Netflix unveils plans for a Dragon’s Dogma anime series

The streaming giant Netflix has shared details on some upcoming anime shows they want to produce in partnership with Japanese animation studios. Among several projects is also 2012’s hit action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma. There’s no info when the series will premier as of now.

Dragon’s Dogma is the little RPG that could. Originally released for last-gen consoles, the action-RPG became a sensation for its deep and varied combat system. But it was also too ambitious for the PS3 and Xbox 360 who were showing signs of their age. Framerate drops and the usual low resolution lead to Dragon’s Dogma being constantly on the list of requested remasters when the new console generation started.

Capcom listened and ported their game on PC in 2016 to spectacular results. For the first time could the game be played at 4K and smooth 60fps. Not long after, PS4 and Xbox One received remasters and even the Nintendo Switch is getting a port next month. For being the first installment in an unknown IP, Dragon’s Dogma became a sensational success for Capcom.

Based on a world-famous action RPG set in an open world, Dragon’s Dogma from CAPCOM will be brought to life as a Netflix original anime series. The story follows a man’s journey seeking revenge on a dragon who stole his heart. On his way, the man is brought back to life as an ‘Arisen’. An action adventure about a man challenged by demons who represent the seven deadly sins of humans.

It’s still an unexpected choice for an anime adaptation and as such comes as an even more pleasant surprise. Japanese CG studio Sublimation is going to work together with Netflix on the Dragon’s Dogma anime series which has no release date, sadly. But we learn that the story will closely follow the events in the game. Netflix experienced great success with another video game to anime adaption with Castlevania, so we’re hopeful Dragon’s Dogma will similarly work out well.
