NetherRealm’s Ed Boon open to bringing Injustice 2 to the Nintendo Switch

With the Nintendo's Switch defying all expectations and really becoming a hit, it seems like everyone [developers] is having discussions about bringing their hot properties to the hybrid console. Speaking with Gamespot, Netherrealm founder and co-creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon discussed the possibility of bringing his company's latest game, DC's Injustice 2, to the Switch. Admittedly, he said there would obviously be some concessions, like graphics quality and fidelity, but it can be done.

"Yeah, I think at the end of the day you can make almost any game… there are inevitable compromises, but you know, you can make some version of Injustice on the Atari 2600. It's not going to be great, but I bet you can make something."

As far as making that idea a reality, Boon said his art team is fit for the challenge, though they may need to use an external team to handle the developmental handoff. So is he interested, does he have an interest in making Switch games? He says …

"Yeah, actually, I do. It [The Switch] is a pretty different hardware architecture; it's not like you can go from a PlayStation 4 to a Switch really easily. So I think we would need to set up something in terms of an external team. I know on the art team, we have enough people to do three console SKUs, and that would be something we'd need to work out."

The concept of going from other hardware [i.e. PS4, XBox One and even PC] to the Nintendo Switch is not new or untested at this point. EA Games has ported FIFA 2018, while 2K Games has brought over their popular NBA 2K18 game, in its entirety. Though both of those games did have to shave off some quality in the looks department, they both still looked good, played well and offered the same experience as their big brothers. Even the team working on WWE2K18 has said they don't have a separate engine for their game, that the Switch version will be same as the PS4 and Xbox One, with just some degraded graphics.

So while nothing is confirmed, it's cool to see even more developer interest in the Switch, after amazing ports like Stardew Valley, which I reviewed, I think we can safely say, Nintendo's back in the driver's seat and the road ahead looks clear.
