Call of Duty is heading into the augmented soldier future with Black Ops 3, but that doesn't mean they are going to go much further than that. Yes, there are limits to Call of Duty and that limit is the depths of space.
In the past, missions in Call of Duty have explored the final frontier, however multiplayer director Dan Bunting has reminded us that the galaxy isn't for us to explore in Call of Duty. Activision will leave traversing space to Mass Effect and Halo.
Those space missions of the past and the sci-fi feel of Black Ops 3 might make you believe that space isn't very far-fetched, but Bunting doesn't want people getting wild ideas. Call of Duty will always contain some level of authenticity. "The way that we approach the creative on our game? I don't think we’re ever going to reach a point where we just completely ignore finding authenticity." Not looking to kill all the hope that some fans might have had, Bunting did say "never say never."
