Last week at Gamescom, Blizzard made several big announcements regarding its core game franchises. We learned of new cards for Hearthstone; new characters coming to the unreleased shooter Overwatch; big changes to Heroes of the Storm; and World of Warcraft: Legion, a brand-new expansion for the long-standing MMO. Absent from Blizzard’s lineup, however, was Diablo. We know there are some massive changes on the way with Patch 2.3.0, but could there be something bigger on the horizon?
Possibly, as a new listing for an Art Director on an Unannounced Project calls for someone “exceptionally skilled and passionate… to help Blizzard’s next hit game!” One of the “pluses” a candidate applying could have is “a passion for games with a deep understanding of the Diablo franchise.”
Diablo 3 has undergone a number of massive changes since its launch in 2012, but the last major expansion, Reaper of Souls, was released in March 2014. It introduced a fifth act, Nephalem Trials, and the Crusader class, among other things.
Blizzard usually waits for Gamescom and BlizzCon, its own convention celebrating Blizzard’s storied franchises, to make big announcements. With World of Warcraft: Legion stealing the spotlight at Gamescom, perhaps Blizzard is waiting for BlizzCon to unveil the next chapter in Diablo 3. BlizzCon 2015 will take place Friday, November 6th and Saturday, November 7th.
