NES games never were particularly pretty, but you wouldn’t guess it from the hordes of modern games which strive to emulate their iconically gritty aesthetic. YouTuber Geod Studio was also interested in emulating the oldies, but in a rather different sense. Rather than base new games on old graphics, he’s brought NES classics into the world of 3D.
Geod’s latest project is a 3D NES emulator, aptly titled 3DNES, which converts 2D side-scrollers into fully functional and rotatable 3D side-scrollers. The emulator has no impact on gameplay, but the difference in presentation is as striking as it is bizarre.
Already, Geod has brought a third dimension to Dr. Mario, Contra, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Kage and Castlevania. You can see these for yourself in the WebGL version of 3DNES, provided you run it through Mozilla Firefox.
