Square Enix has published a slew of new screenshots for their highly-anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. Apart sweet new images, the developer also penned a nice article sharing their thoughts about the ambitious remake and challenges of bringing such a cult JRPG into the modern age. FFVII Remake comes out March 3rd, 2020 exclusively for PlayStation 4.
Final Fantasy revolutionized the JRPG genre when it originally came out for the PlayStation 1 in 1997. As other highly-influential games, FFVII’s impact was larger than just the game itself. It marked a drastic shift for the publisher who had been largely releasing titles on Nintendo systems prior, by choosing Sony’s new console as the primary release platform. Not only the console changed, but the series advanced into 3D for the first time. Coupled with the PS1’s new CD medium, Square Enix was able to feature high-fidelity CG cut scenes and orchestral music. Things that were unheard-of prior.
Despite the massive impact it had on the industry as a whole, it took Square Enix decades to finally give the seminal JRPG a deserving remake treatment. Announced in 2015, the development likewise has taken unusually long but hey, for all intents and purposes, we are looking at a brand-new game offering cutting-edge production quality as the new screenshots proof.
Square Enix also shared fascinating insight from the development staff what it meant to them to tackle such a monumental task. Doing a cult game justice with a remake is especially difficult, as fans might have wildly different expectations. And you always run a tight rope between staying true to the original and innovating on dated mechanics. Here are some choice excerpts but you can read the entire article here.
Opportunities for discussing our true intentions are few, but with regard to the size of the game that many are asking about – there’s no reason at all to worry. Even in this Midgar portion alone, the density and volume are so great that I had to give directions to lighten them. ~ TETSUYA NOMURA – DIRECTOR & CONCEPT DESIGN
In FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, there will be much less room for player imagination. This fact will probably change the feel of the story considerably. People who know the original might not know quite how to take it. Such is the fear that I have. But I also have conviction. It should be possible to feel a much deeper connection to Cloud as you join alongside him. It would be amazing if you could feel that fiery flame together with him. ~ KAZUSHIGE NOJIMA (STELLAVISTA LTD.) – STORY & SCENARIO
For those who’ve played it: “new but familiar.” For those who haven’t played it: “experience the charm of FINAL FANTASY VII, which moved the hearts of many, now created with the most exciting modern technology available.” I hope you enjoy it! ~ NAOKI HAMAGUCHI – CO-DIRECTOR (GAME DESIGN / PROGRAMMING)
